Reducing consumption will reduce CO2 emissions. Using energy from renewable sources prevents CO2 emissions, and can create new jobs and technologies. As a home or business user you may choose your energy supplier or your building's climate control system. Many renewable sources can be controlled by end users, making them a threat to large established businesses trying to preserve their capital and profit with maximum consumption and political control.
Solar power turns heat from the sun into heat for interior use, or into electricity. A building or water can be heated, and electricity can be exported. Solar panels are a known, stable technology which pays for itself, and photovoltaic foil strips are being developed.
Wind power turns a turbine which generates electricity. Turbines may be small domestic ones, larger community ones, big wind farms, or offshore wind farms.
Geothermal power uses reliable natural heat stored in the earth. Home ground heat systems use the warmth just below the surface of the earth to warm water, which can then be circulated for domestic heating. The pumping requires electricity input.
Water power can be hydroelectric, wave, or tidal power, or use temperature differences in water. Biomass means recently created fuels such as wood and agricultural waste burned for energy. Biodiesel is a fantasy fuel where crops produced with fossil fuels are used to power motor vehicles, reducing food supplies and increasing food prices. Essentially this means feeding motor vehicles instead of people - another clear demonstration of the belief that people in motor vehicles are worth more than those who are not, and so have the right to kill them.
Nuclear energy is expensive and produces waste that needs insecure long term storage. This also assumes future money, training, and social and economic stability for thousands of years to cope with the consequences. If society becomes less stable and prosperous it will certainly not be able to cope. Why would anyone promote nuclear power except to subsidise large companies and assist the production of nuclear weapons?
